Two weeks after marrying his boyhood girlfriend, Liverpool player Diogo Jota passed away at the age of 28 when his Lamborghini crashed off a road in northern Spain.
Along with his younger brother, Andre, a 26-year-old professional football player who tragically perished in the early-morning collision, the Portuguese forward was riding in the supercar.
At Cernadilla near Zamora in northwest Spain, near the Portuguese border, the Lamborghini’s tire is reported to have blown out when it was passing on the A-52.
Around 12.35 in the morning, the supercar rolled off the road, caught fire, and ignited the nearby vegetation. The brothers could not be saved despite the emergency services being contacted. According to the police, they are still unsure of the driver.
According to a statement released by Liverpool FC, Diogo’s family, friends, and supporters had experienced a “unimaginable loss,” and the club is “devastated” by the tragedy. Several supporters are crying as flowers and condolences are being placed outside Anfield today.
Jota just married Rute Cardoso, who had been Jota’s companion since she was sixteen and was 28 years old. Cardoso is the mother of his three children. He shared heartwarming video from their wedding day in his last Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon, calling himself the luckiest guy alive to be her husband.
On June 22, the couple tied the knot in the football player’s hometown of Porto. In a social media post Wednesday, Rute published additional photos from the wedding day and wrote, “My dream come true.” “I’m the lucky one,” Jota said in the comments section.
The Lamborghini crash occurred in the province of Zamora on the A-52. After leaving northern Portugal, cars frequently use the Spanish dual carriageway to reach the ports of Santander and Bilbao or to drive northeast toward France.
Around 12.35 a.m. on Thursday, emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region reported the collision and the deaths of two people. At about eight in the morning, the Portuguese Football Federation verified the deaths of Diogo and Andre.
The best player in Portugal and Jota’s friend and teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, stated today: “It doesn’t make any sense.” You were just married when we were together on the national team just now. In addition to my sympathies, I wish your wife and kids the very best of luck and strength. You will be with them forever, I’m sure of it. R.I.P. Andre, Diogo. You will be missed by all.
Since Jota is a common last name, Diogo, who was born Diogo Silva, changed it to stand out. Andre, his brother, continued the family name.
The boys’ parents were Joaquim and Isabel Silva. They were their only kids.
