Florian Wirtz is a potential blockbuster addition to Liverpool’s roster as they seek to bolster it this summer.
After losing the battle for Wirtz to the Merseyside powerhouses, Manchester City has given up on acquiring him.
Liverpool is reportedly nearing a deal for Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly seeking a fee of around £125 million, according to a May 24 Football Insider report.
Stefan Borson, a former financial consultant for Man City, has revealed Football Insider that the agent of the Germany international, who is also his father, plans to eliminate competition for his son’s services.
During the most recent season, the 22-year-old made 45 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, tallying 16 goals and 15 assists.
In a £29.5 million agreement, Liverpool has already finalized the acquisition of Jeremie Frimpong from the Bundesliga team.
After taking over for Jurgen Klopp last summer, Arne Slot guided his team to the Premier League championship in his first season at Anfield.
As Liverpool finalizes the deal, Florian Wirtz’s strategy is made public.
If Wirtz wins the Ballon d’Or in the future, Borson disclosed that Liverpool may agree to add-ons that would see them spend £125 million for him.
“If you’re Leverkusen, your auction has been ruined because his agent, who is his father, is trying to eliminate any competition,” he told Football Insider.
If the player wants to join, Liverpool can say, “We’ll wait it out, we’ll pay a good fee, but we’re not paying £125 million,” or “We’ll pay £125 million if he wins the Ballon d’Or within the next three years.” In a similar vein.
“If the player reaches such heights, Liverpool has won everything, therefore it’s a simple option for them.
In my opinion, the purchase will likely be completed. Leverkusen, I suppose, has leverage because they can say, “Well, to be honest, we’ll keep him for another year unless you’re going to pay the fee.”
But given how obviously his contract is likely to edge down, I believe that to be a bit of a bluff. I’m not sure if Wirtz would find it appealing to stay at this time.
“He’s undoubtedly eager to get moving as soon as possible if he’s determined to do so.
“Given where we are right now, I believe he will end up at Liverpool for £100 million down plus some add-ons, if you had to wager.”
